Grading system – May 25th, 2009

Most technical education institutions in India can be classified into 2 categories:

  • Independent
  • Affiliated to the university

The independent institutions like the IITs have their own grading system  (relative grading), where  students are assigned a grade depending on their performance relative to that of the rest of the class. So if most of the class gets 5/100 , the highest scorer in the class who gets 10/100 is assigned an A grade.

Most engineering colleges are affiliated with the university in their area and follow the standard marking system based on marks scored, followed by universities in India

Though he has brought out what is relative grading it is ridiculous to say that someone with 5% marks is passed It being continuous assessment this will never be the case. and it is also up to the teacher to decide which grade should be given to highest score. If the class as a whole was not doing well the highest grade can be B or lower too.
