Grading system – 25. May, 2009

Most technical education institutions in India can be classified into 2 categories:

  • Independent
  • Affiliated to the university

The independent institutions like the IITs have their own grading system  (relative grading), where  students are assigned a grade depending on their performance relative to that of the rest of the class. So if most of the class gets 5/100 , the highest scorer in the class who gets 10/100 is assigned an A grade.

Most engineering colleges are affiliated with the university in their area and follow the standard marking system based on marks scored, followed by universities in India

Exam formats – 22. May, 2009

Usually the exams have to be completed in a short span of  time. So instead of finding solutions to different questions, which may take a long time and test the understanding of the student, there are many multiple choice questions in the exam papers.   Since some students may not have the time or inclination to solve all the questions and just guess the answers,  there may be negative marking to discourage the practice.

Entrance exams – 22. May, 2009

Till a few years, admission to technical training colleges and institutes was on the basis of  the marks in the higher secondary board examinations (Standard XII).  However, as the number of students  appearing for different board exams has increased,  most states have entrance exams for students.   These exams are usually held soon after the board exams are over and have a similar  syllabus.
