Most of the students who study for their degree in engineering are products of coaching classes. Unfortunately, these coaching classes only focus on doing well in the entrance exams , and not on understanding the subject well or thinking independently.

Diploma – 27. May, 2009
Most diploma engineering courses are of length three to four years. The four year courses usually include practical training of up to one year, where the students work in companies as trainees to get real life experience. The students may or may not get a stipend for this training. Students can join diploma engineering courses immediately after their secondary school examination. Greater emphasis is placed on the practical aspects as many diploma engineers go on to work as shopfloor supervisors.
ITI – 26. May, 2009
Industrial training institutes or ITIs provide the lowest level certification in the technical field. They are set up by government and provide training in the vocational skills like electrical wiring, welding, painting. Most factory hire shop floor workers who have completed their technical training course from an ITI.
Grading system – 25. May, 2009
Most technical education institutions in India can be classified into 2 categories:
- Independent
- Affiliated to the university
The independent institutions like the IITs have their own grading system (relative grading), where students are assigned a grade depending on their performance relative to that of the rest of the class. So if most of the class gets 5/100 , the highest scorer in the class who gets 10/100 is assigned an A grade.
Most engineering colleges are affiliated with the university in their area and follow the standard marking system based on marks scored, followed by universities in India

Though internet usage in other fields is not widespread in India, most educational institutes offer free internet usage to students and have functional websites. Entrance and other exam results are uploaded onto the websites of the colleges and boards organizing them . The exam results are also some of the most searched terms in Search engines.
Private training institutes – 8. April, 2009
Since there is little scope for professional growth for teachers in schools and colleges, many people take up a teaching job as the last resort. So the quality of education is poor with limited job prospects. To overcome this problem, students flock to private training institutes.
Since the main aim of these training institutes is making a profit, they try to ensure that the subjects taught to the students are in demand. They also try to ensure placement for their students, so that they can list it in their promotional literature.
